    The ute is a popular type of light-commercial vehicle (LCV), with it featuring an open tray or tub behind the passenger compartment. An abbreviation of 'utility', utes originally targeted tradespeople, but they're now often used as off-road adventure vehicles due to their availability of four-wheel drive (4WD), with two-wheel drive also available. Utes are even increasingly used as family cars thanks to their dual-cab body-style that typically seats five occupants. Single-cab and extra-cab configurations with two or three seats are also offered alongside pickup and cab-chassis options.

    Toyota HiLux 2024 review: GR Sport - GVM test

    If Oscar Wilde was correct in claiming that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Ford should be blushing.Its audacious decision to create the Ranger Raptor, an extreme performance version of the local hero, with unique body, chassis, suspension and engine enhancements inspired by Mexico's bruising Baja off-road race, has triggered numerous imitators.One of those is Ford's nemesis Toyota with a unique GR Sport version of its venerable 4x4 HiLux dual cab ute, based on the existing 'wide-track' Rogue and (according to Toyota) inspired by the company's Dakar Rally-winning GR (Gazoo Racing) HiLux off-road racer. It's the most powerful diesel HiLux to date.Although not as extreme as the Raptor, Toyota's typical pragmatic approach has resulted in an eye-catching and more heavy-duty off-road-focused version of its top-selling ute, that offers unique suspension, engine and body enhancements while ensuring that the HiLux's fundamental load-carrying and towing abilities are not compromised.So, with our tradie hard-hat on, we recently put a HiLux GR Sport to work with a big payload to see if the latest Hilux flagship has maintained its workhorse practicality.

The Mitsubishi Triton, that’s what!Over five generations since 1978, it’s been quietly working away in the background, while hotshots like the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and Toyota HiLux hog the spotlight.Mind you, lately the Japanese-branded, Thai-built mid-sized ute’s been a number-three seller in Australia.Now there’s this, the sixth-generation, MV-series Triton, and for the first time it’s had some big Aussie input into the way it feels, drives and behaves.So much so, in fact, that Mitsubishi has given us our first taste of it in the natural sand dunes of south-eastern South Australia. Yep, another 4x4 first-drive!Triton, meet sand. And sand, do your worst!

    Let's be clear from the beginning. If you're one of the many, many people who's willingly put down a deposit and are patiently (or impatiently) awaiting the arrival of your Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series there is nothing I can do to change your mind.You think this nearly 40-year old off-roader with an ageing V8 diesel engine, limited safety and a price that defies logic is the perfect vehicle for you. But, Toyota has made some major changes (relatively speaking) that may make you want to rethink your order.The 2024 LandCruiser 70 Series - which incorporates the 76 Series Wagon, 78 Series Troop Carrier and 79 Series utes - has arguably had the most comprehensive upgrade since it first arrived way back in 1984.Behind a new-look front end design lies a new powertrain for the 70 Series, the 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel and six-speed automatic from the HiLux.This a seismic change for a genuine automotive icon, so we headed to the heart of LandCruiser country, Broken Hill, to put this upgraded 70 Series through its paces.Toyota didn't have any 78 Series Troop Carriers available for this initial drive, so our review will focus on the 79 Series single and dual cab utes as well as the 76 Series Wagon.
