Kia EV9 2024 review: EV test

This is big news in the world of EVs. And I mean that literally, of course. Because this Kia EV9 is pretty bloody big – about the same size as a full-size 4WD, like a LandCruiser or Patrol.

But this one is a three-row, seven-seat, all-electric SUV, and one that, with a price tag that starts at just under $100K and climbs to just over $120K, pushes Kia into a more premium space than it has ever occupied.

So, how about we go and see how it stacks up?

Price and features – Does it represent good value for the price? What features does it come with? 8/10

The Kia EV9 is landing in dealerships now, with two of the three grades, the Air and GT-Line, available immediately. A third trim level, the mid-tier Earth, has been delayed by a couple of months.

Anyway, Kia’s big electric SUV will kick off from $97,000, before on-road costs, for the Air, making it among the best-value (on a dollar-per-square-metre basis) electric vehicles in the country.

For that, you get a single rear-motor, along with 19-inch alloy wheels, projection headlights with LED DRLs and LED tail-lights, flush-closing door handles and vehicle to load (V2L) functionality.

Inside, there are synthetic leather seats that are powered, heated and ventilated up front, twin 12.3-inch interior screens with a 5.0-inch climate panel in the middle, an eight-speaker stereo, wireless device charging and a powered tailgate.

You also get 'Kia Connect' and over the air updates. In fact, Kia says some 60 percent of car’s onboard computers can be updated remotely.

Next is the Earth, which lists at $106,500, and adds better seats, gloss black exterior detailing, ambient interior mood lighting, a light-up logo in the steering wheel, and some extra safety kit.

Crucially, you also get a twin-motor powertrain that makes more power, and a bigger battery.

Finally, you have the GT-Line, which lists at $121,00, and builds on the Earth’s inclusions with 21-inch alloys, LED headlights, roof racks, privacy glass, digital side mirrors, a dual tilt-and-slide sunroof and remote park assist.

Design – Is there anything interesting about its design? 8/10

“Big, boxy, and some would say beautiful,” says Kia, which suggests the brand expects the design to be polarising. But I disagree.

Sure, the metallic blue of the hero paint colour is a little in your face, but in its more normal colours the EV9 looks sharp, well-proportioned and smaller than its dimensions suggest.

It also looks modern, but not overly futuristic or silly, and like it will age well.

Interestingly, with a drag coefficient of 0.28, the EV9 is as slippery as an Audi e-tron, and slightly more so than a Jaguar I-Pace, despite the front end giving off snow-plough vibes, and looking like it would slice through the air like a house brick.

Inside, the cabin is more pared-back and minimalist than you might expect, and I'm a big fan of the haptic controls embedded into the dash panel, and of the more old-school air-con switches that sit below it.

The office chair-style front seats are super comfy, and I'm enamoured with the twin-screen set-up (two 12.3-inch screens joined by a climate control screen in the middle) which create a wall of tech in front of the driver.

Practicality – How practical is its space and tech inside? 9/10

Very practical. The Kia EV9 is just over 5.0m long, a little under 2.0m wide and a touch below 1.8m tall – dimensions that push it into the full-size SUV camp – and there are three rows of seats providing genuine room for seven.

The middle row is especially spacious, helped by the rail system that allows you to slide it forwards or backwards, depending on where you need the space.

And it's swimming with niceties, like USB ports in the sides of the front seats, and a roof-mounted climate control panel to take care of heating and cooling.

There are ISOFIX attachment points in the middle row window seats, cupholders in a pull-down divider, and storage cubbies galore.

Things get a little tighter once you move to the third row, where legroom disappears and it feels a little tighter for full-grown adults.

That said, it might be the easiest third row I've ever climbed into, with the second row not just tilting forward, but lifting up and towards the front, creating a space you can walk through.

Towing is rated at 2.5 tonnes, and RWD models get a 90-litre frunk, dropping to 52 litres in the AWD versions.

All EV9s get a heap of boot space, growing from 573L to 1233L and 2314L, depending on whether you have seven, five or two seats in place.

Under the bonnet – What are the key stats for its motor? 8/10

It's not so much what's under the bonnet as it is what's at each axle.

Rear-wheel drive models get a single rear-mounted motor good for 160kW and 350Nm - producing a sprint to 100km/h of 8.2 seconds and a 190km/h top speed. The AWD models add a second motor at the front axle, and the outputs jump to 283kW and 700Nm. But because the GT-Line is equipped with an 'Acceleration Boost' function, it's faster to 100km/h than the Earth – 5.3 seconds versus 6.0 seconds.

Efficiency –What is its driving range? What is its charging time? 8/10

There are two battery sizes on offer. The RWD models (for now, just the Air) get a 76.1kWh lithium-ion battery which delivers a WLTP driving range of 443km.

The AWD Earth and GT-Line get a bigger 99.8kWh battery, upping the driving range to 512km and 505km, respectively.

All models are equipped with 800V architecture, which the brand says – when plugged into an ultra-fast charger – will help the EV9 go from 10 to 80 percent charged in just 20 minutes.

Driving – What's it like to drive? 9/10

It's a seriously impressive drive, this EV9, blending smooth acceleration and easy, potent power with the space and practicality of a huge SUV.

Honestly, imagine the size (and thirst) of the internal-combustion engine you'd need to propel a vehicle this size to 100km/h in 5.3 seconds, as you can achieve in the GT-Line.

In fact, I can imagine that for you. The similarly sized Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series takes 6.7 seconds to complete the same sprint, and it needs a 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 as well as a claimed 8.9L/100km to do it.

Thus is the magic of electrification, I guess, with the EV9 accelerating like a much smaller, lighter vehicle, even if your budget only stretches to the rear-drive model (8.2 seconds).

But even more magical, I reckon, is the way the EV9 shrinks around you from behind the wheel. This model has undergone Kia's first full-service suspension localisation program since the horrors of Covid-19, and it shows here.

Body roll is minimal, the grip is impressive and the way the EV9 picks and holds through tighter corners is surprisingly athletic, especially given its size.

For mine, the RWD is the better drive. Slightly slower, sure, but it also feels lighter and more agile, owing in no small part to the rear-driven power, the smaller battery (which saves around 103kg), the single engine and less equipment, all of which combines to drop the total weight from around 2630kg to around 2310kg.

The AWD version feels heavier and a little doughier through corners, but how much that matters is up to you.

Also impressive is the noise in the cabin (almost non-existent, even at speed) and the ride on Australian streets – the EV9 leans towards firm, but not uncomfortable.

Downsides? For mine, the acceleration in the twin-motor variants will take some getting used to, with the lightest breath on the accelerator pushing you above the speed limit (where you will be greeted by the incessant safety-warning chimes).

And speaking of getting used to, I don't think I'll ever warm to digital wing mirrors. They seem pointless, and take up space in the cabin, all to do a job already perfected by physical, old-school mirrors.

Safety – What safety equipment is fitted? What is its safety rating? 8/10

Kia is targeting a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating, so you can expect nine airbags and a full suite of active safety tech.

On the Air, that includes AEB with 'Junction Crossing', 'Lane Oncoming' and 'Lane Change' functions, 'Highway Drive Assist 2.0', lane keeping assist (with 'Lane Follow Assist'), multi-collision braking, front and rear parking sensors, active cruise control (with stop and go) and a rear-view camera.

The Earth then adds a surround-view monitor, blind-spot monitoring and reverse AEB. Finally, the GT-Line scores 'Remote Smart Park Assist'.

Ownership – What warranty is offered? What are its service intervals? What are its running costs? 8/10

It won't suit everyone and every lifestyle, but big, bold family friendly electric motoring is on offer in Australia in the shape of the Kia EV9.
