Cheaper by the diesel! Isuzu MU-X large SUV to gain new engine option from its D-Max ute cousin and make it more competitive against Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

The 1.9-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine is already available in the D-Max ute where it makes 110kW/350Nm.

A new more affordable variant for the Isuzu MU-X large SUV is likely on the way with Isuzu Ute Australia (IUA) confirming plans to introduce a smaller engine to the range as an option.

Already available in some variants of the brand's popular Isuzu D-Max ute, the 1.9-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine is expected to make its way into at least the lower LS-M and LS-U grades of the three-row MU-X SUV.

"IUA plans to introduce the Isuzu 1.9-litre engine available in some current D-Max variants to the MU-X range in 2024," an Isuzu spokesperson confirmed to CarsGuide.

"Exact timings and model range at this stage is not confirmed, but we will provide more information when it becomes available."

Before details are confirmed, we can make some educated estimations about pricing and outputs as well as which variants are likely to see the 1.9L unit.

In the D-Max (and in the closely related Mazda BT-50 ute) the 1.9 engine makes 110kW and 350Nm, down on the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine's 140kW and 450Nm.

In the D-Max, it's also linked to either the six-speed manual or automatic gearbox, though the MU-X is currently only available as an auto, so expect the latter.

While Isuzu hasn't confirmed how much cheaper the MU-X will be with the smaller engine, the price difference between the two engines for the same grade and transmission in the D-Max is $2000.

That means the base MU-X LS-M in rear-drive, which starts from $48,900 before on-road costs, could come down to around $46,900 if the MU-X follows the ute's lead.

Pricing, precise timing and exact variants are yet to be confirmed, so keep an eye on CarsGuide.com.au for more info as it comes to hand.
